In an effort to encourage reading among children, three Richmond County libraries have selected winners for their Summer Reading programs this year.

“Every year, we have a summer reading program as part of the Sandhills Regional Library System, where we encourage children to read,” said Peggy Wilkes, children’s coordinator at Leath Memorial Library in Rockingham. “They come to the programs and we bring in performers like magicians and musicians. We even have clowns that come and encourage the children to read, also. After that, (children) check out books to read and we keep them on a reading record. At the end of the summer reading year, we tally them up and choose a winner from Hamlet, Ellerbe and Rockingham, and that winner receives a grand prize.”

This year, the libraries decided on bean bags so each winner could enjoy a comfortable and cozy reading environment.

Winner for the Leath Memorial Library was Rafy Christie, who won the prize for reading the most books during Summer Reading.

“(Rafy) is 6 years old and attends Temple Christian School,” Wilkes said. “He loves baseball, soccer and reading books, of course. Rafy has been coming to our story times here at the Leath Library since he was a toddler, and now that he has grown, he attends our Summer Reading programs. This was a very special summer for Rafy — he was able to get his own library card.”

Winners of the Hamlet Public Library summer reading program were Austin, Hayden, Carson and Hudson Hadinger.

“We had a wonderful Summer Program, and are looking forward to our Star Wars Reading Day on October 5,” said Belinda Norton, children’s coordinator at Hamlet Public Library.

Jaylyn Efird was named the winner at Kemp Memorial Library in Ellerbe.
