Chevonne Wallace, daughter of Richmond County Judge Tanya Wallace, was sworn-in Friday as an assistant district attorney during a ceremony at the Richmond County Courthouse.

“I’m speechless,” said Tanya Wallace. “It makes me very proud of her.”

Friends, family and co-workers were present at the swearing-in to support Wallace as she launched her career. She took two oaths, one which will allow her to practice law in Richmond County and the other for her to practice as an assistant district attorney.

Chevonne Wallace received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. She got her law degree from Campbell University in May.

Wallace graduated from Richmond Senior High School and chose to come back to Richmond County to serve the community in which she was raised and watched her mother preside.

“This is really surreal,” Chevonne Wallace said. “By fifth grade I knew I wanted to be a lawyer.”

According to Wallace, her daughter always watched lawyers, clerks and judges growing up and coming back to Richmond County wasn’t a hard decision. Her family, friends, church and home are in the community.

Chevonne Wallace will work as an assistant district attorney with the District Attorney’s office under Michael Parker with whom she interned with while still in law school at Campbell University.

“I’m excited for her future,” Tanya Wallace said.

According to Kathy Gainey, clerk of courts for Richmond County, this is the first time in Richmond County’s judicial history that a mother has sworn in her daughter as an attorney.
