Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, from Freedom Baptist Church in Rockingham with Rev. Dan Donalds and Rev. Michael Carpenter officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park.
Jerry was born in South Korea on November 5, 1969, to Jerry W. Avant and the late Yon Suk Yi. He graduated from Richmond Senior High School in 1988, and served in the US Coast Guard for 10 years following graduation. Committed to helping others, he graduated from Sandhills Community College with a degree in nursing and was an LPN at Pinelake Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, and had just finished his course of study and was preparing to take his board exams to become a Registered Nurse. He had made his home in Carthage with his fiance’, Jill DeGarmo, and attended Cornerstone Baptist Church.
He gave his life in the protection of others, and his heroism leaves both a great sense of pride and sadness in all those who knew and loved him.
Jerry is survived by his fiance’, Jill DeGarmo of Carthage; his father, Jerry W. Avant of Rockingham; his paternal grandmother, Evelyn Avant of Rockingham; a sister, Frances Greene of Rockingham; a nephew, Joshua Greene of Rockingham; three nieces, Britany Birdsong, Kailee Birdsong, and Peyton Greene, all of Rockingham.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Russell-Marks Funeral Home in Rockingham, and at other times at 1925 Ardsley St., Rockingham.
Memorials in his honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
