A Rockingham man in jail on criminal charges was allegedly assaulted by three other inmates last week at the Richmond County Jail.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Daniel Boone Call Jr. of 114 Stillwell St. in Rockingham reported that at approximately 10:24 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, he was cornered in his jail cell by three inmates, who struck him several times in his face. Call told authorities that the three men were trying to steal money he had gotten during a visitation at the jail.
Police have charged Derrick Thomas Rush, 23, of 991 Ledbetter Road in Rockingham, Allan Jerome White, 24, of 2067 Caddell Road in Hoffman and James Charles Dawkins Jr., 33, of 508 Ridge Drive in Hamlet with attempted common law robbery, kidnapping and assault inflicting serious bodily injury, arrest records show.
After the assault, Call was taken to a holding cell where EMS responded and checked his injuries. An incident report said the man’s injuries were not serious and that he did not go to the hospital.
Call said he planned to speak with a magistrate in reference to warrants once he was released, but the Sheriff’s Office chose to take out warrants immediately.
“We have a zero tolerance policy for that in this facility,” said Richmond County Sheriff James Clemmons Jr. “We will prosecute these men fully.”
The Sheriff’s Office said Rush and White have been placed under $100,000 bonds, while a $125,000 secure bond was set for Dawkins.
