Concord businessman Richard Hudson was sworn in to the 113th Congress Thursday afternoon in Washington, D.C., to represent the people of North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District.
John Boehner, the current Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, swore-in the 435 members of Congress with Hudson being one of those members. Out of the 435 members, 67 were new members that have never been in Congress before. The 8th District runs from Charlotte to Lumberton, and includes Richmond County.
After being sworn in, Hudson said:
“I am humbled and honored by the opportunity the voters of North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District have given me today. My Freshmen Republicans and I were elected because Americans are fed up with out-of-control spending, high unemployment, and an Administration that doesn’t listen to their concerns.
“Every day my focus will be aimed at creating jobs, cutting spending, and advancing a balanced budget. The decisions we have to make won’t always be easy, or popular, but we have to make the tough choices now in order to get our fiscal house in order and get people back to work. I’m eager to roll up my sleeves and get started,” said Hudson.
Hudson was sworn in surrounded by his friends and family. More than 80 constituents from North Carolina went to the ceremony to show support for Hudson, said Anna Haberlein, Hudson’s communications director.
Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Cheerwine were served along with finger sandwiches at a reception after the swearing in ceremony.
Hudson, a Republican, earned the 8th Congressional seat in the November 2012 election, defeating long-time congressman Larry Kissell, a Democrat.
