Howard M. Atkinson, 90, of 321 Marshall Ave., Rockingham, died Saturday, January 5, 2013. He was born on May 22, 1922 in Richmond County, the son of William G. Atkinson, Sr. and Mable May Morgan Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson served his country in the Navy during WWII, in a ship repair unit in the Philippine Islands. He was a salesman all of his life and also a member of the Rockingham Masonic Lodge. Mr. Atkinson has been a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church since 1947.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 8th at 2:00 p.m. at Glenwood United Methodist Church with Rev. Joel Perry officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond Memorial Park with Masonic rites.

Mr. Atkinson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances Bodie Atkinson; a daughter, Bonnie Atkinson Stewart; and a son, Donnie Atkinson.

Surviving are five grandchildren, Kim Sweatt and husband Michael of Rockingham, Kathy Porter and husband Stephen of Rockingham, Michelle Ethridge and husband Trey of Raleigh, David Atkinson of Clayton, and Tammy Goodwin of Cary; twelve great grandchildren; a brother, Phil Atkinson of Kennesaw, GA; a son-in-law, Jerry Stewart of Rockingham; and numerous extended family members.

The family will receive friends Monday, January 7th from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham.
