The Town of Hoffman has a busy weekend planned that will recognize fathers and sons for Father’s Day and will help give the Parks and Recreation Complex of Hoffman a boost.

Starting Friday evening, there will be two basketball games for men to compete in. Hoffman Commissioner Daniel Kelly said ladies of all ages will get together to form a cheer-leading team.

Saturday morning there will be a march for fathers and sons, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Seaboard Street behind Fletcher’s Chapel Church. The march will end at the Parks and Recreations Complex at 106 Thompson St.

“We invite all males from the age of eight and older, who are physically able to walk the distance of the march,” said Kelly.

Saturday will go on with plenty of activities planned for all ages, but if you see something you want to participate in, be sure to register for it. Activities include bingo, an Xbox tournament, a treasure hunt for the young ones, a car and motorcycle show and a car give-away.

For a $10 ticket, you could win a ‘99 Buick Regal. The winner will be responsible for taxes and tags.

There will be a basketball throwing contest as well. Whoever makes a basket from half-court first will get a prize.

Bobby Collins, head coach of Winston Salem State University men’s basketball team, will be the Grand Marshal, and Richmond County Sheriff James Clemmons Jr. and local pastors will be Co-Grand Marshals.

Collins is originally from Hoffman, said Kelly. Collins played basketball at Eastern Kentucky University from 1987 until 1991, earning All-Ohio Valley Conference Honorable Mention in his senior season. He earned his degree in Business Administration and Management and played basketball in Finland before returning to his alma mater to spend two years as an admissions counselor. In 1994 he took his first coaching job with the Old Dominion Monarchs.

Winners of contests and events on Saturday will be recognized Sunday during the 11 a.m. service at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church at 3920 N. U.S. Highway 1 in Hoffman.

If you have questions about the event or want to pre-register call Daniel Kelly at 910-281-4476.
