First Baptist Church of Rockingham was the setting for the March 10, 2012, wedding of Lara Erin Griffis of Rockingham and Justin Drew Gregory of Hamlet. The 5 p.m. candlelight ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Allison Farrah before a large assemblage of family and friends.

The bride is the daughter of Danny and Kathy Griffis of Rockingham and the granddaughter of the late John and Carole Capps and the late Inez Griffis, all of Waycross, Ga. She is a 2010 North Carolina Nurse Scholar graduate of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She is employed as a registered nurse at FirstHealth Richmond on the medical/surgical floor.

The groom is the son of Jeff and Jacque Gregory of Hamlet and the grandson of Vann and Shirley McDuffie of Hamlet and Vivian Gregory of Raleigh. He is a 2009 graduate of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise physiology. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of North Carolina-Pembroke. He is employed at Sandhills Alternative Academy.

The bride was given in marriage by her parents and escorted to the altar by her father. The petite beauty was stunning in an original Allure Couture creation. The diamond white, fashion forward gown was made of bridal satin and delicately ruched throughout the entire slim silhouette while Swarovski crystals sparkled on the one-shouldered design. The gown featured a sweetheart neckline and a corset back. For the ceremony, the bride wore a shoulder tip veil sprinkled with crystals and a feather and crystal adornment in her hair. Her hand-tied bouquet consisted of a variety of white lillies and white roses embedded with crystals and artistically placed dainty white feathers. For sentiment, the bride carried the same monogrammed handkerchief her mother and grandmother carried in their weddings.

The maid of honor was Miss Mary Susan Smith of Wake Forst. The matron of honor was Mrs. Terra Lamont Fuller of Hamlet. Bridesmaids included Allison Griffis, sister of the bride, of Winston-Salem; Miss Amber Chavis of Rockingham; Miss Kelly Mann of Graham; and Miss Grae Hawks of Columbia, S.C. The attendants were dressed alike in floor-length gowns of turquoise with wide black empire sashes. Each carried a hand-tied nosegay of assorted white flowers and black and white feathers.

The groom chose as his best man his brother, Grey, of Charlotte. Groomsmen included Steven Steele of Jacksonville, Fla; Terrell Horne of Charleston, S.C.; Karson Sprinkle of Ellerbe; Seth Burgess of Charlotte; and Ben Billingsly of Hamlet.

Music was provided by Ms. Judy Harris, organist, Ms. Cyndi Mercer, pianist, and Mrs. Jerri Aiken, soloist. Program attendants were Miss Kakki Hilton and Mrs. Catherine Shelly. Presiding at the guest registry was Mrs. Marjorie Rainey. Mrs. Debbie Wrenn directed.

The reception was held at the beautiful National Golf Club in Pinehurst and continued the couple’s turquoise and black art deco theme. Guests were welcomed by Hal and Bess Shuler.

After dining and dancing, the couple left by a decorated golf cart to begin the first part of their honeymoon at the Villas of National. They then traveled to St. Lucia for a week’s stay. The newlyweds are now at home in Hamlet.

The evening before the wedding, the groom’s family hosted a rehearsal dinner at the elegantly restored Hamlet Depot. The delicious plated meal was catered by Simply Elegant Catering of Rockingham and was attended by 50 guests.
