Fresenius Medical Care North America has appointed a new medical director of the Fresenius Medical Care Laurinburg and Fresenius Medical Care Scotland County facilities.

Dr. Muhammed J. Iqbal earned his medical degree from King Edward Medical University in Lahore, Pakistan. He is a board certified kidney specialist, also called a nephrologist, with Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg. He also serves as a member of the American Society of Nephrology and the Renal Physician Association

Mike Nelms, regional vice president for Fresenius Medical Care, said that the medical care facility is happy to be working with Iqbal. “He contributes a tremendous amount of medical expertise, and will help to ensure that patients enjoy all the benefits of UltraCare, our name for excellent, patient-centered care and customer service.”

“The Laurinburg and Scotland County teams do an excellent job of providing Fresenius Medical Care patients with the highest quality of dialysis care and support,” Iqbal said.

“I look forward to working with these talented individuals to bring the latest dialysis technology and treatments to our community,” he said.

Iqbal’s duties will include providing guidance to the clinical staff to deliver high-quality patient care as well as ensuring the facilities meet all federal and state regulatory requirements.

Fresenius Medical Care North America is a major provider of kidney dialysis services and renal care products. The facility provide products, dialysis care services, education and support for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), including treatment options for later stage CKD.

According to the Centers for Disease Control’s Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative from October 2012, more than 20 million U.S. adults were estimated to have CKD and most are undiagnosed.

Kidneys that can’t filter waste and extra fluid build up in your blood can cause diabetes and high blood pressure according to the Fresenius Medical Care website. The kidneys can also lose the ability to produce hormones that assist in making red blood cells, controlling blood pressure, and maintaining healthy bones.

Other problems associated with kidney disease are inflammation of the kidney nephrons, and diseases that are inherited like polycystic kidney disease and some birth defects, autoimmune diseases like lupus, malformed kidneys, kidney stones, and repeated urinary tract infections.

Dialysis is a life-sustaining process that cleans waste products from the blood and removes extra fluids when a person’s kidneys fail. Dialysis patients typically require treatment on an ongoing basis unless they receive a kidney transplant.

Both Fresenius Medical Care Laurinburg and Fresenius Medical Care Scotland County are accepting new patients.

Fresenius Medical Care-Scotland County is located at 1061 Aberdeen Road, Laurinburg. The phone number is 910-277-3592.

Fresenius Medical Care-Laurinburg is located at 701 Lauchwood Dr., Laurinburg. The phone number is 910-276-6669.
