Jane C. Smith has been the Ellerbe Town Clerk for 29 years.

In the time she has been there, she has watched the town change and met many people in the community. She multi-tasks and knows the ins and outs of Ellerbe Town Hall and all who come there.

She recently received state recognition in the form of a service award for her hard work and dedication.

Smith became a North Carolina State Certified Clerk through the completion of the N.C. Association of Municipal Clerks Program, conducted by the School of Government of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Smith was awarded the North Carolina Certified Municipal Clerk designation from the N.C. Association of Municipal Clerks and School of Government, for achieving its “high educational, experience, and service requirements.”

Smith said she always liked typing and bookkeeping in school, and pursued business degrees and certificates at Wingate University and Sandhills Community College. She is married with two children and has a twin sister who lives nearby. Her daughter Victoria recently completed pharmacy school in Savannah, Ga., and her son farms and works for a lumber company. Her husband Richard is a lab supervisor for Perdue Farms in Candor.

“It was nice,” said Smith about receiving the award, a certificate mounted on a stone tablet.

“I think she deserved to get (the award),” said Ellerbe Town Council member Brenda Chambers, who has been on the council for 15 years. “She is a very dedicated employee. I think she’s very good at what she does.”

Chambers said Smith has been able to get to know many people in the community because of her presence and years of dedication.

As an established member of the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks, Smith joins the first class of municipal clerks from North Carolina who are receiving the state designation of North Carolina Certified Municipal Clerk.

The N.C. Association of Municipal Clerks is a professional organization of city, town and village clerks from across the state, dedicated to the continued growth and development of clerks and their municipalities.
