The Town of Dobbins Heights has received a $75,000 Community Development Block Grant for infrastructure hook-up.
In a letter to Mayor Antonio Blue, Henry McKoy, assistant secretary of the North Carolina Department of Commerce Community Development, said: “We commend you on your efforts to connect low and moderate income residents to public water or sewer lines.”
The grant will allow the town to complete a sewer project which was started about three years ago, with the help of the NC Rural Center and NC Agricultural funds in the amount of $500,000.
“Finishing this project is important because we have people who are using broken or old septic systems,” said Blue. “They need to be connected to a public sewer system.”
Many in the town are already connected to the City of Hamlet’s sewer system.
“The benefit of having everyone in the town using a sewer system, rather than possibly damaged and overflowing septic tanks is that it promotes a safe and sanitary environment, as well as protects our groundwater,” said Mary Magee, Dobbins Heights town clerk.
Magee reported that there are about 15 residences who will be connected using this grant.
