The Crockett Chamber of Commerce marked its 30th year last week at a "Golden Ticket" gathering and next week celebrates another local birthday. The chamber will commemorate what would have been the 85th birthday of actor Aldo Ray, perhaps the town's favorite son, with a film festival from noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 25. The Aldo Ray Film Festival is a free screening of three of the veteran actor's films at the Community Center, 850 Pomona St. Ray came to Crockett from Pennsylvania, where he was born Aldo DaRe in 1926. He attended UC Berkeley and saw combat on Iwo Jima as a U.S. Navy frogman during World War II. Ray became town constable of Crockett after the war, until he got his break in show business when he was picked for a film part in 1951. That began a 40-year career playing tough guy roles in film and television that continued until Ray's 1991 death in Martinez.
