The Democratic Women of Richmond County will head to the Democratic National Convention later this week, but they almost didn’t get to go.

“We are still waiting on credentials,” President Pam Dillman had said on Wednesday. “They gave them all out. We are waiting to see if we can get credentials from other states.”

By Friday, the Democratic Women had all the credentials they needed and were able to finalize their plans.

Those who are going with them will meet in front of Ollie’s in Rockingham on Thursday at 8:45 a.m. Participants are being encouraged to bring snacks for the ride. There will be a rally there before the bus leaves, and politicians are expected to make speeches.

“We will pull in to the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte at noon,” said Dillman. “The bus holds 56 people and will be filled to capacity. Some people will follow us in cars.”

According to Dillman, this type of bus ride is not common.

“It was hard to get this done,” she said. “This is one of the few buses in North Carolina doing this.”

According to Priscilla Sanders, a member of the county’s Democratic Women organization, the bus will carry people from Anson, Cumberland, Moore, Scotland and Richmond counties, with the majority of them being from Richmond County.

“Most of them are Democratic Women (members),” said Sanders. “Some have just joined. We have 27 new members.”

The Democratic Women will head to Charlotte for just one day to see President Barack Obama accept his nomination from the Democratic Party and make his keynote speech.
