On Thursday evening the business community of Richmond County gathered in the cafeteria of the Sandhills Regional Medical Center for business after hours.

The Richmond County Chamber of Commerce sponsored event happens every month in different locations.

“Its a good place to recruit new clients, as well as fellowship,” said Marshall Yates.

More than 50 individuals had the chance to partake of frozen drinks and a buffet in a tropical atmosphere.

“A lot of work went into making this happen,” said Kimberly Harrington, marketing and public relations director of Sandhills Regional Medical Center, said.

The new Chief Executive Officer of Sandhills Regional Medical Center Mike McNair was their along with his wife Brenda.

“I would like to thank the ambassadors for making this all possible,” said Emily Tucker, president of the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce.

McNair welcomed the new surgeons to the SRMC staff: Dr. Fabian E. Alzamora, Dr. Amelia M. Jeyapalan, Dr. R. Clayton Steiner, Dr. David W. Grantham and Dr. H. Willy Chu. The five surgeons are based in Pinehurst Surgical Clinic.

Each of the surgeons take turns working one day a week in the Sandhills Medical Group at 108 Endo Lane in Hamlet.

“If you call each day you will get one of us,” Chu said.

Chu is a general surgeon who has been practicing medicine since 1988 and has done work in Rhode Island and North Carolina.

“They had the need for surgeons here because they had lost two,” Chu said. “I think that we will fill the need that is here.”

The surgeons also respond to emergency calls that come from the SMRMC.

“I think that we have a very good reputation and will improve the surgical care and quality,” Chu said.

The Richmond County Chamber of Commerce is celebrating 65 years, it was started in 1945. The next after hours will be on July 15 at Rockingham Manor.
