RAEFORD — Hoke County and Richmond Senior keep rolling along as both schools improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Bucks continued their winning ways by using the legs of running back Detrez Newsome. The senior ran for more than 100 yards and scored three times as Hoke County pulled away from Seventy-First 35-20.
The rest of the Southeastern Conference fared well, going 5-1 on the week. The only team to stub its toe in Week 3 was Purnell Swett. The Rams surrendered 47 unanswered points in a 53-10 loss to Hoggard.
Sanderson at Hoke County
Coaches: Tony Lewis, Sanderson. Milton Butts, Hoke County.
Records: Sanderson 1-2. Hoke County 3-0.
Last game: After scoring on its first two possessions against Green Hope, Sanderson went scoreless the rest of the way in a 29-13 loss. Despite the defeat, the 13 points was the most the Spartans have scored this season. Hoke County ran its winning streak to three games following its 35-20 win over Seventy-First. Detrez Newsome rushed for more than 100 yards for the third straight game.
Key matchup: Detrez Newsome vs. Sanderson rushing defense. Newsome has over 700 rushing yards through the first three games. The Bucks have relied on Newsome nearly exclusively in building their 3-0 record. While Sanderson has been struggling to score points, its defense hasn’t played that poorly. The Spartans posted a shutout against Panther Creek and is allowing just under 18 points a contest.
Scotland at Jack Britt
Coaches: Richard Bailey, Scotland. Brian Rimpf, Jack Britt.
Records: Scotland 2-1. Jack Britt 3-0.
Last game: Scotland rebounded following its first loss in 16 games by knocking off Marlboro County (S.C.) 20-12. Josh McPhatter rushed for the Fighting Scots lone touchdowns and Ben Utter added two field goals in the victory. Jack Britt continues to roll along despite the departure of its long-time coach Richard Bailey. The Buccaneers rolled past Southern Durham 42-7.
Key matchup: Richard Bailey’s emotions going up against his former players. For the first time since the Jack Britt opened its doors, Richard Bailey will be leading a football team out of the visitor locker rooms. Bailey walked away from a team which many experts believe can battle for a state championship to retool a squad which lost 20 starters off last year’s 4A titlists. Bailey will have to treat this game like any of the others on the schedule and not get lost in trying to beat his former team.
Seventy-First at Lumberton
Coaches: Bob Paroli, Seventy-First. Mike Brill, Lumberton.
Records: Seventy-First 0-3. Lumberton 2-1.
Last game: Seventy-First remained winless in Bob Paroli’s final season on the Falcons’ sideline. Despite a 35-20 loss to Hoke County, Seventy-First may have found a few bright spots to build on the rest of the year. The Falcons rushed for 211 yards and the relatively young team could be understanding the Wing-T offense. Lumberton needed the long arms of Demetrius Sheridan to block a South View extra-point attempt in the fourth quarter to hold on for a 27-26 victory.
Key matchup: Seventy-First Wing-T vs. Lumberton Wing-T. Even though both coaches believe in running the football 95 percent of the time, neither have seen the normal success they get out of their “throwback” offenses. The Falcons and the Pirates have fumbled the ball away too many times for the pounding and the bruising from their running attacks to wear down their opponents so far this season. The Robesonian’s Brad Crawford said it best about this matchup, “If you’re a fan of the forward pass, turn away.”
Reagan at Pinecrest
Coaches: Josh McGee, Reagan. Chris Metzger, Pinecrest.
Records: Reagan 2-1. Pinecrest 2-1.
Last game: After averaging 40 points in its first two games of the season, both wins, Reagan came back down to earth against East Forsyth. The Raiders fell for the first time last week 43-7. Pinecrest extended its winning streak to two games with a 44-27 road win against Cox Mill. The Patriots spotted the Chargers a 14-point advantage before storming back for the victory.
Key matchup: Pinecrest’s rushing attack vs. Reagan’s run defense. Pinecrest wants to establish the run against its opponents and mix in the occasional pass. The Patriots rushed for 256 yards in Week 3 and could find similar success against Reagan tonight. Since opening the season with a 32-3 win over Glenn, the Raiders have allowed 40 and 43 points, respectively. In last week’s loss, Reagan surrendered 419 yards on the ground to East Forsyth.
Purnell Swett at New Hanover
Coaches: Mark Heil, Purnell Swett. Kevin Motsinger, New Hanover.
Records: Purnell Swett 1-2. New Hanover 3-0.
Last game: The Rams appeared to regress following its victory in Week 2 over Western Harnett. Purnell Swett led 10-6 before Hoggard came roaring to life and scored the game’s final 47 points in a 53-10 victory. Despite posting a 28-7 win over Wallace-Rose Hill, New Hanover coach Kevin Motsinger was not pleased with his team’s effort. He believed the Wildcats may have been still basking in the glow of the previous week’s 21-16 win at Scotland.
Key matchup: Purnell Swett’s offense vs. New Hanover’s defense. Purnell Swett coach Mark Heil has to be searching for answers on offense once again. Heil thought the addition of running back Andrew Hill and the insertion of quarterback Jeremiah Swett into the lineup had solved the majority problems. Hill was the lone bright spot for the Rams last week, running for 133 yards on 17 carries and catching a 70-yard pass from Swett for a score. The Wildcats have one of the best defenses in the Wilmington area, allowing opponents just under 10 points a game.
