Martha and Archie Brooks, formerly of Hamlet, now residing at Scotia Village in Laurinburg, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Sept. 4. Archie Brooks retired as an engineer from the Seaboard Airline/Coastline/Amtrack Railroad, this year achieving 70 years of membership with the BLE (Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers). Martha Brooks was a homemaker, active in her children’s education and activities, and was a dedicated member and volunteer at Firs Presbyterian Church in Hamlet.
On Sunday, Sept. 2, the couple, both 93, were honored at a party given at Scotia Village by their daughters, Beth Brooks Elliott of Laurinburg, and Sarah Brooks Joyner of Cary. Family attending included the couple’s four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren from North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Ohio. Other family in attendance were Donna and Tom Lambeth of Winston-Salem, and Ruth and John Shaw of Lake Lure.
A three-tiered wedding cake, white with red roses, was topped by the bride and groom first used on the couple’s original wedding cake. An arrangement of 24 red roses was placed on the entrance table, along with a guest registry also used for the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary party. Approximately 100 guests, including many friends from Hamlet and from Scotia Village joined in celebrating this very special occasion.
The couple also received a personal letter from President and Mrs. Obama congratulating them on their dedication to each other and on reaching this very special milestone.
