A judge has increased the bond for a man arrested for kidnapping last week from $100,000 to $250,000.
Michael Anthony Allen Jr., 24, Steele Street, Rockingham, was arrested and charged with kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to seriously injure, identity theft, common law robbery and breaking and entering of a motor vehicle; all of which are felonies. The incident happened in the Falling Creek Shopping Center’s parking lot late Thursday when he forced a woman into her car and made her drive away with him. She managed to escape in the Hamlet area.
“Where he was going, I couldn’t tell you,” said Maj. William Kelly with the Rockingham Police Department. “But we’re glad she made it out when she did.”
Reports say Allen approached the victim in a parking lot asking for a light and quickly forced her into her vehicle.
Following two failed attempts to escape, the victim managed to jump from the moving SUV around Jefferson Road and Highway 177 in Hamlet.
She was transported to Sandhills Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Allen had taken the vehicle as far as Mizpah Road in Hamlet, where it was later discovered.
According to Kelly, Allen was located at a family member’s residence in Richmond County Friday night.
“Detectives found him (Allen) after working with the Probation Office, as well as the Sheriff’s Office,” Kelly said.
Allen’s arrest came following a tip submitted to law enforcement by someone who read an article posted on the Daily Journal Web site Friday evening.
He is currently detained in the Richmond County Jail awaiting a Dec. 10 court date.
