If you like souped-up cars or restored classics, the fourth annual Richmond County Crime Stoppers Car Show might be your cup of tea.
“This year we’re including two new categories,” said event organizer Rick Deese. “Motorcycles and ‘donks’ — a donk is one of those cars on the giant wheels. I’ve seen some with some pretty impressive paint jobs, and I think our car show will be the first donk competition in the county.”
Last year, about 40 cars and trucks entered, but the threat of bad weather and the holiday weekend held many participants at bay.
“We’re not going to do it on Memorial Day weekend again,” said Deese. “And I think the weather this weekend is supposed to be sunny and in the low 80s. We should have a really good turn-out.”
The event will be held Saturday in the Cole Auditorium parking lot on the RCC Campus in Hamlet. The show will last from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free to the public, and the vehicle entry fee is $20.
Trophies will be awarded for best bike, best donk, best GM, best truck, best Ford, best mopar and best in show.
“The funds we raise from the entry fees will benefit Crime Stoppers,” said Deese. “We pay individuals for anonymous tips that lead to a conviction. We’ve been busy lately — getting some good tips.”
There will be raffles to win prizes from O’Reilly Auto, Firestone, Helms Jewelers, Auto Carpet Pros and Loch Haven Golf Course. There will also be 50/50 drawings and cornhole games.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Hamlet and Rockingham police departments, Am Vets, K2 Solutions, Andy’s Auto, Boy Scouts of America, Kings Gate Church youth ministry, Music Masters, Hamlet Fire and Rescue, East Rockingham Fire Department and NC Highway Patrol will also be on site with demonstrations and information.
“K2 came last year too,” said Deese. “They brought the canines that they train for the military and did demonstrations for everyone. Am Vets will be selling hot dogs and burgers.”
“We’ll have bounce houses and slides for the kids,” said organizer Gwen Avant. “The Humane Society will be out there with some pets, and I hope to have some dance teams. It’s a very entertaining day and a great way for everyone in the family to have a good time.”
