To the editor:
Twenty-one-gun salute and three-volley salute. It is amazing to me how so many “military” people do not know the difference.
Only the president, former presidents and president-elect rate the 21 gun salute, with certain exceptions for foreign leaders.
The three-volley salute often involves seven people in the honor guard, hence the confusion. The honor guard may contain less then seven and often does.
I see and hear our veteran organizations and this paper — along with all media outlets — misuse the terms. Calling it what it is, three-volley salute, does not in anyway diminish the importance of the salute. If it is worth doing, it is worth doing right.
