EDEN — Cher Morse doubled home two runs in a six-run third inning, Macie Gibson and Emily Parsons each had two hits and the Rockingham Belles beat Moore County 11-2 Saturday in the North Carolina Dixie Youth Softball Tournament.

Peyton Fann, Greyson Way and Tori Mabe all had one hit for Rockingham, which plays Burgaw on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the winners’ bracket. NaLee Jacobs, Way and Mackenzie Webb combined on a two-hitter on the mound.

After Moore County scored two unearned runs in the first, Rockingham cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second before rallying to take the lead in the third.

Webb led off with a walk before Kylie McDonald reached on an error. Parsons bunted safely to load the bases and Lindsay Hunter walked to force in the tying run.

Morse lined a double to the fence in left-center to bring home McDonald and Parsons to put Rockingham ahead 4-2, and Fann extended the lead to three runs with a sacrifice fly to plate Morse. Walks by Owen Bowers and Way extended the inning, and Gibson singled to bring home Bowers. That made it 7-2 and Rockingham cruised from there.

“We are really proud of our girls’ win today,” coach Danny Lampley said. “It’s nice to get the first one under your belt. We need to continue to pitch, hit, and play defense well up here to advance. There are four or five teams that provide great competition.”

Angels perfect in tourney opener

EDEN — The Rockingham Angels all-star team cruised to a win in its first game of the Dixie Softball state tournament Saturday afternoon in Eden.

Rockingham blanked Eden 19-0 behind a combined perfect game from Morgan Singletary and Quston Leviner. Singletary had five strikeouts in two innings on 22 pitches. Leviner struck out the side in the third on 10 pitches.

Jakerra Covington went 3 of 3 with a home run and three runs scored. Allyiah Swiney was 2-for-2 with a home run and scored three times. Mattie Liles was also 2 of 2 with a run. Payton Chappell was 2-for-3 with a run.

The Rockingham Angels will return to action 2:30 p.m. Sunday against Montgomery County. Rockingham defeated Montgomery County 9-0 to win the District 4 championship last month in Troy.

Montgomery County received a bye into the second round after the team from Garner elected to withdraw from the tournament. Because of that the brackets have been altered. The winner of Monday’s Rockingham-Montgomery County contests will face Dunn 2 p.m. Monday.

The first round matchups in the lower half of the bracket has Reidsville against Bessemer City and Fuquay-Varina versus Hope Mills.
