FAYETTEVILLE — Sergio Chaparro scored two goals as the Richmond Senior boys soccer team remained undefeated this season.

Chaparro netted both of his goals in the first half as Richmond posted a 5-2 victory over Pine Forest Wednesday night. The game was originally scheduled for Raider Stadium, but preparations for the upcoming football season forced the change in venue.

“We dominated the first half and led 4-2 at halftime,” Richmond coach Bennie Howard said. “We probably had possession for about 75 percent of the first half.”

Armando Garcia and Johnny Juarez added goals for the Raiders (2-0) in the opening 40 minutes. Andrew Balzer scored the team’s final tally with approximately 30 seconds remaining in the contest.

“In the second half, we continued to attack but they were counter-attacking so we had to put an end to that,” Howard said. “I’m happy we scored five goals, but I’m not happy we gave up two. Their second one was on a PK (penalty kick) on a hand ball.”

In the junior varsity contest, Richmond defeated Pine Forest 10-3 as Andrew Coble netted three goals and Jonathan Tadlock added two. Max Diaz, Patrick Hamilton, C.J. Helms, Victor Lucero and Ricardo Torres all notched a tally in the victory.

Richmond will return to action 7 p.m. Monday when it welcomes South View to Raider Stadium. A junior varsity contest is set for 5 p.m.

Anson sweeps Richmond in volleyball

WADESBORO — For the third straight season the Richmond Senior volleyball team is off to an 0-2 start.

After falling in five games in its season opener, Richmond was swept by Anson Wednesday night. The Bearcats claimed a 25-12, 25-13, 25-18 victory over the Raiders.

“They were a strong team and we had an off game,” Richmond coach Shellie Wimpey said. “We had to overcome a lot of adversity with calls not going our way and going theirs. Hopefully that will make us a tougher team mentally.”

Richmond will return to action 6 p.m. today when it travels to Sanford to face Southern Lee.

“We played better as a team on Monday, so the girls just have to put this game behind them and come out ready to play tomorrow,” Wimpey said.

In the junior varsity contest, Anson also swept Richmond.
