ROCKINGHAM — In its 10 years of existence, MaxPreps.com has ranked high school football teams based on a computer formula.

To celebrate its anniversary, MaxPreps.com released its list of Top 20 most dominant teams in the state during this time. MaxPreps.com awarded points based on where a school finished in the final rankings to compile the list. In addition, teams were awarded bonus points for winning a state championship or finishing as the runner-up.

Three Charlotte area schools top the list, followed by one from Greensboro and another just south of Statesville. Richmond Senior is tied with Shelby at No. 7.

MaxPreps.com ranks Independence as the top team in the state over the last 10 years with 266 points. Independence has a 116-25 record over this time along with three state championships. The Patriots also finished as the No. 1 team in the poll four times.

Butler checks in at No. 2 with its 120-23 mark, three state championships and 263 points. The Bulldogs had eight Top 10 finishes in the MaxPreps.com rankings.

At No. 3 is Charlotte Catholic with 226 points. The Cougars have two state titles during this 10-year period, a 129-21 record as well as seven Top 25 finishes in the poll.

Dudley earned 208 points and is fourth in the MaxPreps.com rankings. The Panthers are three-time state champions and are 113-28 during this era.

West Rowan used its three-peat on the 3A level from 2008 to 2010 to place fifth. The Falcons have compiled a 121-21 mark and finished in the Top 5 in the poll all three years they won the championship.

Reidsville accumulated 180 points to claim sixth, three points ahead of both Richmond and Shelby. The Rams are 127-23 in the previous 10 seasons and have won three 2AA titles (2007 to 2009).

The Raiders and the Golden Lions both finished with 177 points. Richmond is 115-21-1 with a 4AA championship (2008), while Shelby is 116-35 and captured three 2AA titles (2005, 2006 and 2013).

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 are New Bern and Northern Guilford.
