ROCKINGHAM — Ricky Young hasn’t been in his new position very long, but he was put to the test this week.
The winter storm that passed through the region earlier in the week forced Richmond Senior’s athletic director to adjust the basketball and wrestling schedules.
“It’s just part of the job,” Young said. “You can’t control the weather. Everyone was in the same boat as us. And everyone works well together around the conference.”
The first adjustment came to the Richmond-Scotland basketball doubleheader set for Tuesday in Laurinburg. Young and his counterpart, Tommy Britt, elected to slide the games, as well as a wrestling match, to Thursday believing the ice and the snow covering the roads would have cleared.
When both school districts elected to keep its students at home once again on Thursday, Young and Britt once again had to come together to find a suitable date to play the basketball games and get in the wrestling match before the weekend’s Southeastern Conference tournament. The pair decided to schedule the wrestling for Friday and push the basketball games into the following week.
Everything appeared to be set as the temperatures slid above freezing and started to melt the remindants of the winter storm.
The only problem was the both school districts decided to keep schools closed Friday, meaning the wrestling match would have to be included as part of the SEC tournament today at Pinecrest.
In addition to working with Britt and now getting the basketball games between the rivals set for Wednesday, Young had to call Hoke athletic director Gary Brigman to reschedule Friday’s basketball doubleheader. Richmond and Hoke will now battle on Feb. 12 in Raider Gymnasium.
