Raiders run past Braves

CHERAW, S.C. — It may not be the turning point in the season, but it made Richmond Senior girls basketball coach Victoria DeFrate feel good about her team.
After losing by nine in its last game, Richmond stormed out of the gates against Cheraw (S.C.) Tuesday night.
The Raiders scored the contest’s first eight points en route to a 62-32 victory over the Braves. Richmond improves to 2-1 on season with the win, while Cheraw drops to 1-6.
“We played the best we have all year,” DeFrate said. “We are starting to know what we are doing on defense and anticipating passes. We are getting to know where we are supposed to be on the court.”
For the first time this season, Shaquail Wall was held under 20 points in a game. In fact, Wall failed to break into double digits and that was fine with DeFrate because she has been looking for other players to contribute.
“A little pressure was taken off Shaquail tonight,” DeFrate said. “We have others that can score.”
The Raiders had three players who scored season-highs in the victory. Jade Evans led the way with 15 points, Kivana Keane netted 12 and Asiana Douglas contributed 10.
Keane said it was good to have others ease the offensive burden on Wall.
“Every game we know we can count on Shaquail,” Keane said. “There will be games when someone else will need to step up. Tonight it was me, Asiana and Jade.”
In the teams’ first meeting, Richmond squeezed out a 53-52 over Cheraw. DeFrate and Keane agree the 30-point victory was a result of hard work in practice.
“We are understanding what Coach (Ted) Gaskins and Coach DeFrate want us to do,” Keane said. “We are starting to put things we learned in practice and using them in a game.”
DeFrate added she believes the team is still a work in progress but likes what she is seeing right now.
“We are handling the ball better and being more comfortable when pressure is put on,” DeFrate said. “Our defense continues to work hard.”
Richmond will return to action 6 p.m. Thursday at Douglas Byrd.
