Richmond cruises past Purnell Swett

PEMBROKE — There was a danger of having a letdown after its upset victory the night before.
But the Richmond Senior soccer team put that fear to rest fairly quickly against Purnell Swett.
The Raiders scored four times in the first half and added five more in 28 minutes of action in the second half to roll to a 9-0 over the Rams. The win improves Richmond to 6-6-1 overall and 5-3 in the Southeastern Conference.
“It’s good to be .500,” Richmond coach Bennie Howard said. “It’s a good feeling and it keeps us in the hunt for third.”
Sergio Charparo led the way for the Raiders with three goals. Juan Onesto and Caleb Watkins each added two in the victory.
“We played well and we got to play guys who don’t get the chance to play a lot in the last 20 minutes,” Howard said.
Richmond will return to action 7 p.m. Monday at Raider Stadium when SEC leader Pinecrest comes to town. Earlier this season, the Patriots defeated the Raiders 3-1 in Southern Pines.
JV Raiders roll to win
ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior junior varsity football team had five rushing touchdowns and added another two through the air en route to a 49-6 win over Hoke County Thursday night at Raider Stadium.
Quientel Goodwin and Shawn Faulk each rushed for two scores and Anthony Billingsley had one of his own for the Raiders (6-0, 1-0). Tyler Calhoun tossed touchdowns to Lavell Ellerbe and Desmond Marshall.
Despite the victory, Richmond JV coach Jason Norton said he was surprised his team was flat against the Bucks.
“They were really hype before the game,” Norton said. “Then the game started and it wasn’t there. I told them at halftime sometimes you have to create your own.”
Richmond will return to action 7 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Purnell Swett.
Anson stops Ellerbe
WADESBORO — The Ellerbe Middle School football team fell to 1-1 on the season after a 32-6 loss to Anson Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats’ lone touchdown came a James Jasper kickoff return in the final moments of the contest.
Ellerbe will return to action next week at Rockingham Middle School.
