ELLERBE — A local business is doing its part to help the fight against breast cancer.

The Berry Patch, located along U.S. Route 220 in Ellerbe, is serving pink vanilla-flavore ice cream through Monday. Fifty percent of the profit will be going directly to the Cancer CARE Fund in Pinehurst.

The ice cream parlor began the fundraiser in an attempt to get the community involved aiding local residents that are struggling with breast cancer. Employee Robin Maples understands how detrimental breast cancer can be as she has family members who have survived the battle against breast cancer.

“I think it was a great idea,” Maples said. “People that ask for vanilla, I try to get them to switch to the pink vanilla.”

Maples’ efforts must be working because although this is first year the business has donated funds to this cause, the turn out has been excellent. With hundereds of dollars already raised the community continues to donate to the cause.

“Community support has been overwhelming,” said The Berry Patch owner Amy Berry. “People have been buying pink ice cream (and) donating directly to the fund.”

The turnout has been so positive that owners as well as staff are hopeful this will become an annual event. Anna Grant, 18, who has worked at The Berry Patch for four years said, “The public response has been amazing,. This will likely turn into a yearly thing.”

The Berry Patch, located on 351 Cargo Road, is offering the pink ice cream through Monday but no ice cream is needed to make a donation. Half of profits will go to Cancer CARE Fund. The Cancer CARE Fund has some of the highest-quality cancer programs which guide the fight against the various forms of cancer in the mid-Carolinas, according to the fund’s website.
