McBEE, S.C. — Sheriff’s deputies say a man accused of domestic assault claimed to be God, Jesus Christ and the archangel Gabriel.
Chesterfield County deputies arrested 30-year-old Larry Dean O’Neal of Tabernacle Church Road south of McBee on July 30 after he allegedly attacked his live-in girlfriend.
The woman called 911 and told a dispatcher she did not feel safe around O’Neal. Sheriff’s Sgt. Don Hughes interviewed the suspect and said the assault stemmed from an argument over his claims of divinity.
“He stated that he and the victim had gotten into an argument when he tried to tell her who he was,” Hughes wrote, adding that O’Neal “tried to tell her he is Jesus Christ and the archangel Gabriel.”
Deputies also interviewed the woman, who had scratches to her face and bruises to her arm and chest.
“Victim stated that the suspect had ‘lost it’ this morning and was yelling and screaming,” Hughes wrote in the report, “saying that he was God, that he was Jesus Christ and the angel Gabriel.”
Deputies arrested O’Neal on a charge of criminal domestic violence. He was booked into the Chesterfield County Detention Center. Bond information was not immediately available.
The alleged assault happened near McBee, a Chesterfield County town of about 900 people that’s about 30 miles from the North Carolina and Richmond County lines.
