City of Rockingham joins Facebook

The city of Rockingham has joined the world of social media by creating a Facebook page.
The page name is “City of Rockingham, NC — ‘A City Looking Forward’” and was first published on Sept. 23.
Monty Crump, city manager, said that it was started as a way to stay in contact with the community. Through Monday afternoon, the page had more than 450 followers, or “likes.”
“We had a page a little over a year ago,” Crump said. “However, it closed down. This is a new page that will keep the public informed of the events going on in the city.”
Kim Williamson, events coordinator for the city, has been tasked with maintaining the new Facebook page.
“Social media is how everyone is communicating now, especially the younger generation,” Williamson said. “It is time we started using that form of communication as well.”
Williamson is not the only one with administrative access to the page. All city department heads have an administrative role in the new page, she said.
“It helps me and it helps them make sure that everything is posted on there that needs to be,” Williamson said.
It’s been only a month but it’s a case of so far, so good.
“I think it’s working great,” Williamson said. “The page allows you to see how many people you are reaching. I am still inviting more people everyday. We still are striving to get more to join the page to help connect the community.”
There are still separate pages for the Thursday Plaza Jam and the local Parks and Recreation, but page administrators also post on this new page.
Williamson said the purpose of the page is strictly for information in relation to events that are happening in the city. People with any kind of issues, problems or concerns should still use the proper channels to be directed to the appropriate department to handle the problem.
Comments on how the page is going are welcomed as well as any suggestions.
“We’re hoping to make this a really active page with loads of pictures and information for those around the city,” Williamson said. “So go and ‘like’ us!”
