SILER CITY — A Moore County woman has died and her husband is recovering after their single-engine airplane crashed in the woods during a landing attempt Tuesday.

Barbara Harris Para, 69, of Winding Trail in the village of Whispering Pines, died at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Her husband, 72-year-old Frederick Calvin Para, who was piloting the plane, is currently in stable condition.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. when the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza A36 was attempting to land at the Siler City Municipal Airport, according to Sgt. Michael Baker of the N.C. Highway Patrol. The aircraft was traveling from Southern Pines to Siler City.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash. State troopers secured the crash site and are providing security as FAA officials pick through the wreckage.

The Siler City Municipal Airport has a 5,000 foot runway and full-length taxiways, Baker said.
