HAMLET — For 12 years, Richmond County Schools’ uniform dress code has sent parents and students to Teresa Hatcher’s store.
The Golden Rule at 1805 Hylan Ave., Hamlet, sells school-approved uniforms for all Richmond and Anson County schools as well as middle schools in Cheraw and Pageland in South Carolina and a couple of schools in Montgomery County.
“We get customers from all over North Carolina,” Hatcher said. “Kids will be staying with their grandparents over the summer and go ahead and buy their uniforms while they’re here.”
The Golden Rule is the only uniform store in the area, Hatcher said, and because of it, business has been steady since she opened in 2003. The building used to be a convenience store when Hatcher’s mother owned it. Now, Hatcher uses the space to sell Richmond Senior green along with gold, black, red, orange and other area schools’ colors.
Hatcher’s store sells T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, khaki, navy and black shorts and pants as well as belts and socks, in area schools’ required colors. The store also provides dressing rooms so kids can check out beforehand how they’ll look on a day-to-day basis.
The Richmond County Board of Education adopted a uniform policy in January 2002 and began enforcing it during the 2004-05 school year.
According to regulation code 4317 of the uniform policy, shirts must be a polo style with a collar, must be a solid school color, must be free of labels and graphics and tucked in at all times with the exception of approved sweatshirts. T-shirts can only be worn under clothing if they match the school colors. They not allowed to be worn as the primary shirt.
All bottom garments must be khaki, black or navy in color, free of graphics and frays, worn above the hips at all times, limited to no more than two front and two rear pockets and cargo pockets are not allowed on any garment. Shorts can’t be shorter than four inches above the knee and may be worn at students’ and parents’ discretion.
Students in grades 4-12 must wear belts if the garment was manufactured with belt loops. Pre-kindergarteners through third-graders are not required to wear them. Belts have to be black, brown, khaki or school colored.
The Golden Rule is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
