HAMLET — Police detectives covered three counties to recover a man’s missing moped and arrest the two women accused of stealing it.
Lisa English Norton, 47, of Hamlet and Elizabeth Dale Hailey, 34, of Holden Beach, were arrested late Wednesday and booked into the Richmond County Detention Center.
Interim Police Chief Rodney Tucker said the theft investigation led detectives from Richmond County to Scotland County and across the state line to Marlboro County, South Carolina.
A Hamlet man told police that two women had come to his home looking for money and he later noticed his moped missing, Tucker said in a statement. Police say they learned that the women had been trying to sell a moped in Scotland County.
Detectives also found out that the women were staying in Marlboro County and had been seen asking for money on S.C. 38, Tucker said.
Police obtained warrants for Norton and Hailey on July 25 and arrested the women Wednesday. Both defendants face one count each of felony larceny and conspiracy to commit felony larceny.
Hailey was jailed on a $28,000 secured bond and Norton’s bond was set at $8,000.
Tucker said police found the moped at a Scotland County junkyard where one of the women had sold it. Police recovered the vehicle and returned it to the owner, he said.
