FAYETTEVILLE — N.C. Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said he was pleasantly surprised by the special guest who introduced him at his Tuesday night campaign fundraiser.

Former Richmond Senior High School principal Ralph Robertson greeted Goodwin on stage at the Fayetteville event.

Robertson attended Hamlet High School with Goodwin’s mother, worked for Goodwin’s father at Winn-Dixie grocery when it was in Hamlet and served as the insurance commissioner’s high school principal when Goodwin graduated 30 years ago in 1985.

“He made me nostalgic for home and the more carefree days of my youth,” Goodwin said in a statement. “And he reminded me of how vitally important my education has been to my success. Ralph Robertson has always been in my corner and supported me every step of the way, just like so many of my public school teachers have throughout my life and career.”

Goodwin, a Hamlet native and former Richmond County state representative, was elected state insurance commissioner in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012.

The next election for this Council of State office is in 2016.
