ROCKINGHAM — A Richmond County teenager due in court today is accused of stealing $1,600 in cash from a city resident.

Kaylin Marie Nicole Simmons, 16, of Sandy Ridge Church Road north of Rockingham, was arrested June 19 on a charge of felony larceny. Rockingham police say Simmons took the money on March 22 and 23, according to an arrest warrant.

A Richmond County magistrate released Simmons to the custody of a parent or guardian and scheduled her first appearance in district court for Thursday morning.

Larceny of goods or personal property is a Class 1 misdemeanor when the value is less than $1,000 and a Class H felony when the value exceeds $1,000.

Under North Carolina structured sentencing guidelines, a person convicted of felony larceny who has no past criminal history could receive 4 months of probation to 6 months of incarceration.
