ROCKINGHAM — A man is being held in the Richmond County Jail under a $25,000 bond after fleeing from a Rockingham checkpoint, abandoning his car and later turning up at Scotland Memorial Hospital, according to police.

Brad McMillan, 20, of 15745 Hamlet Road, Gibson, was jailed Thursday after being turned over to the Rockingham Police Department by Laurinburg authorities, according to Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms of the Laurinburg Police Department.

Sessoms said police responded to the emergency room, where McMillan reported that he had been beaten and robbed in the Washington Park neighborhood and said his car had been stolen.

Upon further investigation, Sessoms said, police learned that McMillan had filed a false report.

According to Rockingham Police Chief Billy Kelly, McMillan was driving a 2007 Nissan Altima toward a Rockingham checkpoint when he turned and fled. Police pursued but lost McMillan. His car was later found on Joe’s Court just outside Rockingham.

McMillian faces charges in Richmond County of possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling or vehicle for a controlled substance. Laurinburg police charged him with making two false police reports.
