CHERAW, S.C. — A woman is recovering in the hospital after police say her boyfriend shot her five times last week in a fit of rage.
Tayjha Marie Davis, 23, survived the shooting last Thursday and was able to identify her assailant as her boyfriend, 30-year-old Ronnie Campbell Self, Cheraw’s interim police chief said. Self faces an attempted murder charge in the shooting.
“She is very, very lucky to be alive,” interim Chief Keith Thomas said. “She was shot at close range with a .38 pistol.”
Davis’ friends were sitting on the porch when the shooting began inside her home at the John Motley apartment complex in Cheraw, Thomas said.
“They heard the shots and told her to run,” Thomas said. “He shot at them, too.”
Neither friend was injured, according to police. Paramedics rushed Davis to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she remained on Wednesday.
Thomas said her condition is improving and it is possible she will be released later in the week.
Self, of Davis Street in Cheraw, has been charged with two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a firearm by a felon and attempted murder.
Self remained in custody Wednesday. The amount of his bond was not immediately available.
