ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Public Library System will kick off its science-themed summer reading program, called Fizz! Boom! Read!, on Friday at Leath Memorial Library in downtown Rockingham.

A massive book sale will take place from 1 to 8:30 p.m., said Deborah Knight, the library’s coordinator. Knight said there would be more than 1,000 paperbacks and children’s books available for purchase.

“A bag of paperbacks, which is roughly 10 books, will be just a dollar,” Knight said.

The books will be available to peruse in the conference room located just off of the lobby and in the lobby itself. Knight said people donated a large number of books to the library because they know money raised at the book sale will go to a good cause.

Said Knight, “We’re good stewards with the money.”

In addition to the book sale, 2014 marks the first year that North Carolina libraries have asked kids in the summer reading program to register online. Leath Memorial Library employees will have laptop computers on hand Friday night, ready to sign up anyone interested in taking part.

“This will be the first year that the kids will keep track of their own time and minutes online,” Knight said.

Reading won’t be the only focus on Friday as the band Dixie Ambush will hold a concert from 6 to 8 p.m. Knight suggests that attendees bring their lawn chairs. The Rockingham Lions Club will be cooking hot dogs and popcorn and serving drinks.

Joy the Clown will be in attendance making balloon animals and a bounce house in the parking lot will keep the kids entertained.

The summer reading program will take place all summer long at the three libraries located in Richmond County. Hamlet Public Library will have programs at 10 a.m. on June 18, June 25, July 2, July 9 and its grand finale fun day on July 11.

Kemp Memorial Library in Ellerbe has programs planned for 2 p.m. on July 2, July 9, July 16, July 23, and July 30 with its grand finale taking place on Aug. 1. Leath Memorial Library will have programs at 10 a.m. on July 16, July 23, July 30, Aug. 6 and a grand finale titled Rock Star Magic on Aug. 13.

Knight said the dates and times have been staggered for kids who wish to attend programs at more than one library.
