ROCKINGHAM — A Richmond Senior High School student drowned in the Pee Dee River on Saturday.

Authorities say 17-year-old Jaquan Bailey of Hamlet drowned Saturday while fishing with a group of friends at Blewett Falls Lake in Richmond County. The recreation area is between Richmond and Anson counties.

Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen Jr. said early Monday that the teen drowned on the Richmond County side of the river.

Family members told WSOC-TV that Bailey decided to jump into the water to cool off and went under the water. The friends were unable to pull him out.
