ROCKINGHAM — Police say a woman pumped more than $1,300 worth of gas and stuck Richmond County social workers with the tab.

Patricia Elaine Smith, 46, of 219 Bryan Circle, Rockingham, is accused of charging gasoline to the county Department of Social Services. She told management at Conner’s Convenience Store at 701 E. Broad Ave. that she was a DSS employee and requested gas vouchers from the business, according to a warrant for her arrest issued Wednesday.

Smith went to the store 24 times between April 1 and May 1 and had $1,324.40 worth of gas charged to DSS, the warrant states. The DSS worker Smith is accused of impersonating received bills from the gas vouchers and contacted the store.

Rockingham police charged Smith with one count of obtaining property by false pretense. Her first appearance in Richmond County District Court on the charge is scheduled for June 5.
