HAMLET —Kids leaped, climbed, spun and smiled Saturday afternoon as San Diego Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram gave his hometown a free festival of fun.
Ingram, a Hamlet native and Richmond Senior High football standout, hosted the Melvin’s Mission Community Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hamlet Memorial Park. Parents enjoyed refreshments and chatted while their kids jumped in bounce houses, scaled a rock-climbing wall, whirled in the Gyroscope ride and tried their hand in an inflatable jousting game.
Families came from throughout North and South Carolina to take part in the fun. O’Brien Productions of Kennesaw, Georgia, brought the rides and inflatables to Hamlet and staffed kids’ carnival games during the event.
Participants munched on free popcorn and cotton candy and many left the fun day with a free T-shirt. Ingram’s sister, Monique Ingram, said the NFL player paid for the amusements as a way to give back to the community.
