ROCKINGHAM — Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office worked into the night on Monday trying to figure out how a man died.

According to Chief Deputy Mark Gulledge, someone went to the sheriff’s office before noon and told deputies that something needed to be checked out at a home on Mary Wall Road, south of Rockingham.

Gulledge said deputies went to the home and discovered that some type of incident had taken place. During the investigation they discovered the body of a man along the wood line of the property.

Later in the evening, vehicles lined up and crowds of people gathered along the side of Mizpah Road in front of Ashley Chapel Educational Center.

Mary Wall Road was blocked off beside the school and near the property where the body was found.

Investigators walked around the property with flashlights, aided by headlights, as night fell.

Gulledge said it is still early in the investigation and there weren’t any other details available at the time, including the man’s name, age and cause of death.

He did say the case is being investigated as a homicide.

The sheriff’s office is being assisted by the Rockingham Police Department and N.C. State Bureau of Investigation.

More details will be released as they become available.
