WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson joined fellow House Republicans on Friday in voting to freeze federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

In a 241-187 vote, nearly all Republicans and two Democrats approved legislation that would block Planned Parenthood’s federal funding for one year, giving time for Congress to fully investigate claims of wrongdoing by the provider. The vote comes in the wake of an undercover video controversy.

“As an expectant father, I am disgusted by the actions of Planned Parenthood, and I share my constituents’ outrage over the organization’s apparent trafficking in baby organs,” Hudson said in a statement.”Whether you are Republican, Democrat or unaffiliated, pro-life or pro-choice, we can all agree our tax dollars should not go to any organization that breaks the law.”

Included in the legislation is an amendment that will redirect funding from Planned Parenthood facilities to Federally Qualified Health Centers to provide women a better alternative for health services, according to Hudson.

The House also passed a bill tightening restrictions on abortion doctors who violate infant protections in a 248-177 vote. Hudson is a cosponsor of both bills.

“Today we take an important step to stop any crimes from being committed, protect the unborn, and ensure our tax dollars committed to women’s health are used to give women access to health care — not to abort and traffic little babies,” Hudson said.

The vote is largely symbolic, as Democrats are expected to block the bill in the Senate.

Cutting off Planned Parenthood’s federal funding would result in a net savings of $235 million over a decade, according to a report this week by the Congressional Budget Office. It would also cut off access for as many as 600,000 patients, resulting in “several thousand” unplanned births.

House GOP leaders hope the legislation will help avert a government shutdown by appeasing the dozens of conservatives who have pledged to defund Planned Parenthood at all costs.

Lawmakers have five legislative days left to pass a spending bill and stop the shutdown that GOP leadership is aggressively working to avoid.

But half dozen House Democrats took to the floor Friday blasting the abortion bills.

“The Republicans just want to shut the government down if we don’t fund Planned Parenthood. That’s what they’re all about,” said Rep. Frank Pallone, the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The Obama administration has said the president would veto an expansion of the born-alive protection bill.

Hudson, a Republican, said he planned to stay steadfast in his opposition to abortion.

“I am unapologetically pro-life and will continue to fight to defund Planned Parenthood and defend the most vulnerable among us,” Hudson said.
