ROCKINGHAM — Police have charged a Hamlet man for allegedly racking up more than $180 in purchases on a stolen bank card.

According to warrants taken out by the Rockingham Police Department, 45-year-old Willie Harris Mudd III, of Dirt Road, south of Hamlet used the card at several Rockingham businesses.

Warrants show Mudd is accused of: buying 10 packs of Newport cigarettes from Walmart for $62.21; three pizzas from Papa John’s for $34.33; $37.86 worth of items from Mill Road Grocery; and $152.39 worth of items from Murphy USA.

All purchases allegedly took place May 22, according to warrants.

Police charged Mudd with four counts each of obtaining property by false pretenses, identity theft, both felonies and possession of stolen goods or property, which is a misdemeanor.

He was arrested June 21, the same day the warrants were issued, and released on a $25,000 unsecured appearance bond, with a court appearance scheduled for July 28.

Online court records show Mudd has no other pending charges.

Mudd was first convicted in 1987 on a misdemeanor charge of damage to property in Granville County, according to records with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

The following year, he was convicted of felony forgery and breaking and entering and felony larceny in 1989 in Richmond County.

In 1991, he was convicted on misdemeanor counts of aiding and abetting the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and use or possession of drug paraphernalia. Records show he was incarcerated from June 2, 1988 to Jan. 29, 1991.

Less than five months after being released, Mudd was convicted of misdemeanor larceny.

He spent nearly 11 months behind bars — from October of 1994 to September of 1995 — when his probation was revoked on a 1993 misdemeanor conviction of assault with a deadly weapon.

Mudd was convicted misdemeanor worthless check charge in 2006 and two counts of driving while license revoked in 201o in Caldwell County. His last conviction was in 2011 on a worthless check charge in Richmond County.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
