Man charged in Fayetteville rape

ROCKINGHAM — A Richmond County man wanted on sex crime charges in Fayetteville has been taken into custody.

Monday afternoon, Deputies arrested 23-year-old Jeremy Keith Asbury, of Rockingham Road, on a Cumberland County warrant issued July 16.

Fayetteville police say Asbury sexually assaulted a woman over the age of 16, held her against her will and struck her in the head with a silver handgun. The incident allegedly occurred on Saturday, July 11.

Asbury is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree rape.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $175,000 secured bond and as of Wednesday afternoon had not been transported to Cumberland County.

Online court records show Asbury has a number of traffic violations in Richmond County.

According to the N.C. Department of Public Safety, Asbury has no criminal convictions in the state.
