To the editor:
Thank you for your fearless and sometime relentless pursuit to expose the truth. The city of Hamlet stepped onto several slippery slopes in the past 14 months. Choices were made that have compromised the city’s reputation in the community.
In recent weeks, The Daily Journal staff has given us a glimpse of true journalistic integrity in reporting that we should all be proud of. Sometimes the truth hurts. But the newspaper has worked to report the unbiased truth. A number of elected officials took offense to the public bloodletting. The truth isn’t always easy to hear and harder to bear when you are the one that supports the deception. Thank you, Daily Journal, for telling the truth.
This week citizens voted for two new City Council members and a new mayor. The voting public has high hopes that these gentlemen will be able to restore a level of normalcy and order to our fine city. I offer congratulates to Eddie Martin, Jesse McQueen and Bill Bayless. You maintained your integrity while those around you tried to bring you down. A clean campaign is a rare thing in politics.
Hamlet City Council, the citizens of Hamlet will be watching you. The current City Council has fumbled, bumbled and sometimes lost sight of their goals. It is tough to be an elected official. Every day, you must make choices you think are the best choice for the citizens. Sometimes you miss the mark. Sometimes you are spot on. This is your chance to move forward. We cannot change the past but you can use it as a learning experience. But please remember that every moment of everyday, you represent the city of Hamlet and its citizens. This is the unfair side of politics. When you act out, you make Hamlet look bad. Behave yourself. Think about it before you say it out loud or put it out on social media. People are watching. Hamlet’s reputation in the community is tarnished. It is time to put the petty, self-serving motives behind you and look toward the future. We are better than this.
Serve the city to the best of your ability Hamlet City Council and Mayor Bayless. Take us to new heights. Restore order in our fair City. Bring back the honor and civility we were once so proud of. Things have been bleak far too long. We are counting on you.
