On the free-speech implications of an Anson County sheriff’s deputies arresting a man accused of flashing the middle finger at a sheriff’s deputy while driving past a crime scene:
In my opinion, you shouldn’t get arrested for it. Yes, it’s disrespectful, but to get arrested for flipping the bird is ludicrous. But like I said, that’s just my opinion.
Protected speech. A citizen or officer is offended by that? Tough.
Maybe an indecency fine. I really hate that gesture.
I think it’s very offensive, especially to law enforcement. What if it was your family member’s death they were investigating? Anyway, it’s just my opinion and I think that guy was being very childish and disrespectful. Time to grow up or pay the consequences! Way to go to the deputy!
Disrespectful or not, it’s freedom of speech and shouldn’t warrant an arrest. It’s an unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars, and for what? Because the officer felt disrespected? Time for him to get some thicker skin, especially in his line of work. If people don’t get arrested for “shooting the bird” to a non-law enforcement officer, they shouldn’t get arrested just because it was done to an LEO.
I think that flipping the bird just proves ignorance in a person, but I believe that our jails and courts are to busy to deal with something this small. It is a very stupid thing to do and shows lack of respect and no home training. We have had to many rights taken away from us lately. Our rights are very important to keep America alive and well. The ones who wrote these rights pondered and prayed to God to get them, they did not just say “let’s put this in there.” We have almost lost our First Amendment already; let’s just overlook ignorance, let it roll down our back and keep America alive. Or soon they will take away our rights.
