Veteran journalist Kevin Spradlin has been named content manager of The Richmond County Daily Journal.
His first day on the job was Monday.
Spradlin, a journalist for 16 years, will lead the daily report on news and community events delivered to readers through the print edition and the website at http://www.yourdailyjournal.com.
“This is the kind of position I’ve been looking for in the industry,” Spradlin said. “I didn’t want to be someone who sat at a desk all day. Most of the fun in journalism is getting out of the office and meeting people in the community.”
Spradlin, 34, has worked at weekly and daily newspapers in Maryland, Missouri and Oregon before arriving in North Carolina. At the age of 16, Spradlin began as a part-time sports clerk for the Hagerstown (Md.) Herald-Mail and what was an after-school job evolved into a full-time career in news and sports.
“I’ve had newspaper ink on my hands since the age of 7,” said Spradlin, referring to when he began delivering newspapers in his neighborhood. “I love the idea of the newspaper serving as a vehicle of accurate and timely information for readers.”
An Army veteran, Spradlin has three children, ages 14, 11 and 3.
“The thing that struck me about Kevin when I began speaking with him about the job in Rockingham, is his enthusiasm for journalism,” said Donnie Douglas, regional content manager for a group of newspapers for Civitas Media that includes the Daily Journal. “That was clear in my first conversation with him by telephone, and even more clear when we met.
“He will honor this position through hard work and making the Daily Journal the place to find out what is happening in Richmond County.
The Daily Journal is owned by Civitas Media, based in Davidson. Civitas Media oversees more than 100 publications and employs more than 1,400 people in 11 states. The company’s 35 daily, 28 weekend and 63 weekly publications have a combined circulation of more than 1.6 million
