More than 40,000 customers in North Carolina are without power, but less than two dozen of them are in Richmond County as cold temperatures grip the region.

As of 11:15 a.m. as the outside temperature was 17 degrees — and, with the chill, even colder — a report on the Duke Energy website, www.duke-energy.com, showed 17 residential customers in Rockingham were without power.

Duke Energy reported more than 37,000 customers without service in western North Carolina. The utility had more than 2,400 customers without service in the area previously served by Progress Energy.

Dominion reported about 250 customers without service in northeastern North Carolina.
