ROCKINGHAM — The Golden Football has been found.
Preston Miles found the football after only seven of 12 possible clues had been released to the public. But he hadn’t seen any of them.
Despite the small army of Journal readers eagerly searching for the football and the $500 cash prize that comes with the find, the discovery was — oddly enough — completely by accident.
“I haven’t been paying attention to the hints that the paper has been giving this year,” Miles said. “I have in the past, but this year I just didn’t think about it.”
It was a strategy that worked for the 33-year-old cable franchise employee from Rockingham.
Miles was in Rockingham on Medical Circle near FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital working on some cable for a new office building when he suddenly spotted something golden laying in the woods. He walked over to inspect what it was, and he quickly found out it was the Golden Football. He picked it up and, by extension, the $500 prize.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Miles said with a huge smile on his face. “I was just doing my job. Guess I got my Christmas bonus a bit early this year.”
To all those who have been following the hints, this is a sad day — especially knowing it was found by someone who wasn’t even looking. But it appears lady luck was on Miles’ side at the end of the day.
The good news is there is still a second chance to win $100. A drawing will take place between those who complete and return the ballots that appear in The Daily Journal.
