There is a vast amount of individuals today who are trying to live a much healthier life, but many of them don’t really know how to or even where to start. Are you one of them? If so, then you may want to pick up a book titled “You Can,” published earlier this year by Southern Pines resident Jane McClaren.


McClaren felt the need to write “You Can” after she overcame obsessive eating habits and depression. She wrote the book to help motivate others to live a healthier life.


“I’ve accepted that I eat to assuage bad feelings, but I also share how I eat to celebrate a good day, all while keeping fit and healthy,” said McClaren. “It’s important to be the master of both our willpower and our pleasure.”


After 35 years of researching food, McClaren decided to write “You Can,” which took about a year. In the book, she discusses many different things including hidden health risks, food companies and the power that they have over our choices, and how to count calories.


“The book inspires and gives you the tools to change your life,” she said.


McClaren has provided a variety of recipes for you to try out. In the back of the book there are some websites listed to help you find good food, she said.


In her book, McClaren is trying to clear up the mystery about food. In order to do this she has simplified the information so that it is understandable to everyone.


McClaren said one reason that she wrote the book was because there is a lot of contradictory information regarding food. Also, she said that people have reported to her that the more they Google an issue the more they become confused.


McClaren said that she cares about people and just wants them to know that they can enjoy food and be healthy at the same time. She also said that she just doesn’t want to see people suffer through the ill health that is caused by bad food and not understanding food.


“You can empower yourself by making choices for your own well-being,” she said.


McClaren said that the book has helped many people. “I am very pleased about that,” she said.


“I follow what Jane prescribes because it’s logical, pragmatic and makes perfect sense,” said Bill Sahadi, owner of Fore Properties Real Estate in Southern Pines.


“You’ve cleared up so many doubts and misunderstandings about eating well,” said Paul Miller, a stock broker for the United Bank of Switzerland.


McClaren believes that supporting local farmers and organic and sustainable farming is a good decision to make when trying to get healthier. “I want to support good sustainable farmers and the well-being of my body,” she said.


For about two years now, McClaren has been blogging about food on her website. You can find healthy meals to prepare and enjoy while visiting her website.


McClaren is available for speaking engagements and has spoken at many venues including Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, St. Louis, as well as locally.
