Thousands of race fans are expected to descend on Richmond County this weekend, as the 2013 American Drag Racing League (ADRL) tour heads back to Rockingham Dragway for its most prestigious event — Dragstock X.

“The Rock” is hosting the ADRL Dragstock X event this Saturday and Sunday, along with a special all-star event awarding $500,000 on Friday evening.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday admission is free to fans who pay $20 per car load to park in the Rockingham Dragway front or back parking lots. The famed quarter-mile is located at 2153 U.S. Hwy 1 North, Rockingham.

Dragstock X will offer southeastern race fans “a double-dose of competition between the most extreme vehicles in straight-line motor racing,” said track owner Steve Earwood.

Earwood said that Dragstock X — which at its debut attracted the largest one-day crowd in Rockingham Dragway history — will be preceded this year by the ADRL’s “Battle for the Belts,” a stand alone all-star race that will distribute a $500,000 cash purse.

The top eight drivers in points compete for the biggest prizes in extreme drag racing.

The winners in Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous and Extreme Pro Stock will earn $50,000. In Pro Modified, Pro Extreme Motorcycle and Pro Drag Radial, they’ll earn $20,000. Even the Pro Junior Dragster champion will share in the bounty with $2,000 to the winner.

Friday’s “Battle of the Belts” competition will roll right into Saturday qualifying for Dragstock X and Sunday eliminations.

First built in 1969 and opened a year later, the Rockingham Dragway is considered the Carolinas’ premier drag racing facility.

Built by developers Bill Land and L.G. Dewitt to serve as a companion to the 1-mile oval across the street, Rockingham Dragway has served as host to sanctioned events by the International Hot Rod Association, the National Hot Rod Association, the American Drag Racing League, the All-Harley Drag Racing Association and the now-defunct American Hot Rod Association throughout the years.

Rockingham Dragway was one of the first purpose-built dragstrips in the country and was one of the first to feature paved pits, permanent restrooms, permanent concrete grandstands and VIP amenities, including corporate suites with an unobstructed view down the track.

“The Rock” underwent a rebirth in 1992 when Earwood purchased the facility. The track was resurfaced, new grandstands were added, new permanent restrooms were erected, a new ticket office was built, Musco lighting was added to enhance night racing, new timing and scoring equipment were added and additional land was purchased to expand the pit area.

In addition, a spectator crossover bridge was built to connect the pro and sportsman pit areas, the pit area was repaved and concrete guardwalls were installed from the starting line to beyond the finish line on both sides.
